Question: Creative Industries in History

Answer: This special issue of Business History Review brings together five articles on the decorative arts and the jewelry, fashion, and perfume industries from the nineteenth century until the present day. Collectively, they represent components of what can be broadly described as “creative industries.” Although their scope remains debatable, one widely used defi nition of the industries in this category was introduced
by the economist Richard Caves in a path-breaking study published a decade ago. Caves described them as those “in which the product or service is the manifestation of the creativity or artistic abilities of an individual or a team.”
