Question: Mental Health Policy and an Epidemic of Misery
Answer: This chapter focuses on recent policy in mental health. This is a broad field of study
and warrants a book in its own right (see Rogers & Pilgrim, 2014). Thus, specific
policy topic areas have been selected for analysis particularly those that illustrate sociological insights and influences. This chapter specifically focuses on a key characteristic of recent policy which is the interrelation between the emphasis on risk in recent
government policy and its implications for trust which is a crucial issue for patients
and practitioners in this clinical setting. It will also consider the extent to which mental
health policies have been medicalised and/or pharmaceuticalised and the influence of
the drug industry in shaping treatment policy. However, to begin with it will consider
the shape of more recent mental health policy in England.
