Question: Semenggoh wildlife rehab centre wins award (News - Article)
Answer: MIRI: The Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in southern Sarawak has won the Malaysia Tourism Council gold award for "Best Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia".
The award was presented Friday (Oct 25) night in Kuala Lumpur during the council's annual national award ceremony.
On hand to receive the award on Friday night in KL was Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) chief executive officer Zolkipli Mohamad Aton.
SFC manages the Semenggoh centre that is located 20kms in the outskirts of Kuching.
"We are very proud and honoured to be chosen by Malaysia Tourism Council for this highest national award in recognition of wildlife rehabilitation and conservation effort.
"This national award is a recognition of the centre as a model of excellence in areas of wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
"Semenggoh is now a leading eco-tourism destination in the country.
"SFC and the state government are proud that our effort to conserve wildlife are being recognised nationally.
"Our next target is to secure global standard and global recognition," Zolkipli told The Star after returning home.
He said SFC and the Semenggoh team train rescued wildlife to survive naturally in a natural setting.
"The only human direct intervention in the centre is to provide supplementary food to the wildlife that are free to roam and find food among the thick forest canopies," he said.
The Semenggoh centre measures the combined size of 1,613 football fields.
It is a natural forest setting where wildlife rescued from captivity, injured wildlife and orphaned young wildlife are rehabilitated and released into the wild to allow them to live in freedom.
There are various species of wildlife being rehabilitated here such as mammals and birds.
The most iconic animals in Semenggoh centre are Orang Utans.
Foreign tourists and local visitors to Semenggoh often take pictures of these Orang Utans, with some of these cute Orang Utan babies obliging for selfies with their human relatives.
Among the many celebrities and royalty who have visited include Britain's Prince Charles and Hollywood martial arts star Steven Segal.
