Question: When should I worry about lower back pain?
Answer: Certain symptoms that happen alongside lower back pain can be warning signs of something more serious. You should see a healthcare provider right away if you have lower back pain and any of these symptoms:
1. Numbness.
2. Weakness in one or both legs.
3. Problems peeing or pooping.
4. Fever.
5. Light-headedness or fainting.
6. Severe abdominal pain.
While not as urgent, it’s a good idea to see a provider soon if you have lower back pain and any of these:
1. History of cancer.
2. Unexplained weight loss.
3. Severe pain at night.
4. You’re 55 or older and there’s no obvious reason for the back pain.
5. You’re at increased risk of infection due to being immunocompromised.
