MIRI – The public is invited to attend an academic session under the Sarawakiana Talk Series titled “Sarawak Ethnic Languages: Preservation Challenges in the Global Era” on Monday, 23 February 2026, from 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM at the Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri.
This Sarawakiana Talk Series, organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, will focus on the challenges of preserving Sarawak’s ethnic languages within the context of rapid globalisation.
Ethnic languages not only serve as a medium of communication but also represent identity, cultural heritage, and an important channel for knowledge transmission within Sarawak’s multicultural society. However, social changes, technological advancement, and global influences have created new challenges in ensuring the continuity and survival of these languages.
The programme will feature invited speaker Ms. Elia Bit, a lecturer from Curtin University Malaysia, who will share her experiences, real-world challenges, and practical approaches in preserving Sarawak’s ethnic languages. The session will also provide participants with the opportunity to engage interactively through a question-and-answer and discussion session with the speaker.
According to Mr. Davidsal Jimmy Berayen, Officer of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, the programme is expected to strengthen public awareness of the importance of preserving ethnic languages as part of Sarawak’s intellectual heritage and collective identity.
“In addition, this initiative is aligned with the ongoing efforts of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak to preserve, document, and promote the state’s cultural heritage for present and future generations,” he added.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend the talk and may register by scanning the QR code provided in the official promotional materials or via the following link:
