Rural libraries being digitalized, upgraded

Posted on 06 February 2014

KUCHING: The upgrading of all rural libraries in Sarawak is in progress and in full swing.

This was disclosed by Board
Chairman of the State Library Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Hamid Bugo who said
the upgrading involved many aspects, including the digitalization of
literature resources and the provision of computers and Internet access.

“This is to enable libraries
in remote areas to have access to the State Library and other
libraries,” he told a press conference after receiving  US Ambassador to
Malaysia, His Excellency Joseph Y Yun at the State Library here,
yesterday.

Hamid said the State Library also provided training for staff and librarians who manage rural libraries.

“Normally, we focus the
planning and setting up of libraries in rural areas. But for now, we are
still trying to bring rural libraries into the digital era to bring
them on par with urban libraries.

“We have started to digitalize and upgrade rural libraries across the state,” he added.

It is understood there are
more than 100 libraries throughout the state managed by the federal
government, State Library and local councils.

Earlier, the US Ambassador to
Malaysia, Joseph Y Yun, visited the Lincoln’s Corner Sarawak and the
State Library and presented certificates of appreciation from Dyslexia
Association of Sarawak and SK Laksamana Kuching to the alumni of EMPOWER
Programmes of the United States Department.
