Sarawakiana Talk on Japanese Occupation in Sarawak on Friday
Posted on 05 April 2016
KUCHING – A Sarawakiana Talk on Japanese Occupation in Sarawak – Local Perspective will be held on Friday, 8 April at 2.30 pm at the Special Collection Room, Level 1, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak here.
Invited speaker is Edward Lakin Mansel, a government pensioner, who now works as a Tourist and National Park guide.
The talk is about the occupation of peaceful Sarawak by the strong Japanese military power from 1941-1945. During the almost 4 years of brutal Japanese rule in its occupied countries in Asia, it was estimated that more than 10 million people died, suffered in the most horrible ways or displaced. Sarawak was no exception.
The talk is divided into pre-war, the war and post-war years. The topic covers the political and economic situations in Japan and Sarawak, events in Japan leading to the War, the attack on Pearl Harbor, followed by the invasions of South East Asia and Sarawak, the Liberation of Sarawak, the surrender of Japan and the Australian Military Administration.
The objectives are to take a glimpse of the history of Sarawak and local perspective of the Japanese Occupation, to promote awareness among the public of the importance of Sarawak history, especially to the younger generation and to encourage patriotism and peace among the public, especially the younger generation apart from encouraging reading, writing and research on the history of Sarawak.
Admission to this talk is free. For further information, kindly contact Rozana Octovia Raymond Umpu at 082-440488 ext. 19 or email rozanoru@sarawak.gov.my ( State Records Repository ).
