The first ever Sarawakiana

by Pustaka Miri left a positive impression on almost all the visitors
who frequented the three-day event.

Some fourteen different activities
were held throughout the weekend from 24th to 26th June 2011. The carnival attracted about
3,000 visitors. The activities were aimed to create awareness and
promote the cultures and heritage of Sarawak.

Amongst the highlights were ‘Pustaka
Talent Search’ Karaoke Contest, Bermukun Competition, Children
Traditional Costumes Competition, Cultural Showcases
and Sarawak Traditional Food Cooking
Demonstrations.

Other activities included Sarawak
Arts Exhibition, Sarawak Batik Workshop, Sarawak Layered Cake
Workshop, Cultural Forums, Children Cultural Performance, Children
Coloring Contest, My Favorite Read Session With Celebrities, mini
food
and
trade fair.

Main winners of the competitions
organised, received their prizes from the guest of honour during a
prize-giving ceremony. Also held was the prize-giving for the Local
Content Competition (Pertandingan Warisan Budaya Tempatan) 2011,
which commenced early this year. Twelve teams from secondary schools
in and around Miri City completed their project portfolios on the
cultures and customs of Jati Meirek, Vaie/Ba’ie and Kedayan. The
winning team this year is SainSri3 from SM Sains Miri with their
project ‘Adat Orang Kedayan: Makan Tahun’. They took home a cash
prize of RM1,000.00, free Pustaka membership for one year and
certificates.

The opening of the carnival was
officiated on Friday, 24th June 2011 by Assistant Minister of
Communications and Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin. He was represented by
Miri City Mayor Lawrence Lai Yew Son.

The opening
ceremony was held together with the launching of the latest two
Sarawakiana Series collections –
‘People
of The Forest: The Penan’
and
‘Pusau Ngalang Anak: The Kenyah Naming Ritual’
as
well as the opening of Pustaka Miri Information Kiosk.
