Dance... What is Dance?

Posted on 23 April 2009

Pustaka Negeri Sarawak is organizing a Sarawakiana
talk on Dance … What is Dance? on 23 April 2009 at 2.30pm –4.30pm at the
Sarawakiana Room, Pustaka Negeri.

The speaker for the talk is Encik Sharkawi Haji
Amit, a Sarawak dance professional.
Encik Sharkawi Haji Amit previously served in the Cultural Division in
the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanization.  Currently, he teaches dance and owns Cultural Arts Performers
Arena Company (CAPERENA) in Kuching.

This
presentation focuses on the definition, objective and function of dance as well
as Sarawak ethnic dances.  The speaker
will also talk about the philosophy of ethnic dance and the dance movement
through comparison between local ethnic dance and modern dance.  According to the speaker, Sarawak ethnic
dances are performed and preserved by ethnic groups in Sarawak.  Every culture has developed its own means of
expression through movement.  These
dances are part of tribal rituals, designed to be performed at crucial moments
in the life of both the individual and the ethnic groups.

The public is invited to join us in discovering
the uniqueness of dance and ethnic dance in Sarawak. Admission is free.  For further information, please contact
Edison Ricket or Victoria Jonathan at 082-442000.
