Living in the boiler room at Bloggins School may not sound glamorous, but for Martha Snapdragon, the daughter of the school’s janitor, it’s her reality. What really makes this story stand out, though, is the strange turn of events Martha discovers—like the evil principal Dr. Klunk, the school bully Rufus, dancing eggs, misbehaving dragons, and a giant golden spoon stuck in the bathroom wall. Only Martha is able to remove the spoon, which leads her to an unexpected destiny beyond her life in the boiler room. I think Tony Johnston does a brilliant job blending humor and magic while subtly exploring important themes of leadership, responsibility, and community. It’s a fun, quirky read with some deeper lessons.
