DBKU City Library is a public library established by the Commissioned of the City of Kuching North or the Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) to cater for the information needs of the communities in the northern region of Kuching city.

Brief History

In 1966, the Sarawak State Government directed the Kuching Municipal Council to set up a public library for its residents. Four years later, a public library was successfully established and on 15 September 1970 it was officiated by the President of the Kuching Municipal Council, Cr. Song Thian Cheok . It was called the Kuching Municipal Council or KMC Library. The library building was built with a government initial grant of RM50,000 on a half acre piece of land along Jalan P. Ramlee. The total cost of the library, upon completion was RM190,000.

In 1989, the administration of the Public Library was taken over by the Commission of the City of Kuching North. After major renovation and refurbishment work, the Public Library was reopened to the public on 21 May 1990 and renamed the Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) City Library. The objective of the library is to provide access to knowledge, information and works of thoughts through a range or resources and services and is equally available to all members of the community regardless of race, nationality, age, gender, religion, language, economic and employment status and educational attainment. The library also actively supports literacy campaigns as literacy is the key to education and knowledge and to promote the use of libraries and information services.

In 1995, DBKU City Library was the first Library in Sarawak to implement a computerised library management system based on the Horizon Library System. The system was used for almost ten years before migrating to ANGKASA Library Management System. Via ANGKASA Library management System, DBKU City Library is linked to fourteen other libraries in various towns, districts and institutions of higher learning all over Sarawak.

On July 8, 2013, the City Library DBKU has moved to a new location at Level 4 & 5, Majma' Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah or Kompleks Islam Sarawak.
