History
Construction of Sibu Library is a node of the Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) in the central zone of Sarawak. It is in line with SITRC Meeting No.1 / 2002 dated 27 February 2002 stating that "Regional Centers for Pustaka will be located in Sibu and Miri". The project is also in line with the aspirations and policies of the Sarawak State Government to set up information centers in major cities in the state.
The project is a direct negotiated contract and started in 2001 with an initial grant of RM300,000. Since then many discussions have been made to determine the concept of the library. In 2005 the Land and Survey Department approved Lot 456, Block 1, Sungai Merah Town District, Sibu as the project site. From 2006 to 2010 the project was dismissed as there was no provision.
In spite of this, in 2011, the Public Works Department was directed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Communications Development to re-implement the Sibu Library project with ceiling cost of RM25,000,000. In the same year, the Department of Land and Surveys had extended the tenure of placement at Lot 456, Block 1, Sungai Merah Town District, Sibu for two (2) years starting April 12, 2011. From 2011 to 2012, the project allocation of RM15,000,000 has been transferred to the Library account to finance project implementation.
In 2013, the original site of the project at Lot 456, Block 1, Sungai Merah Town District, Sibu was canceled and replaced with Lot 1054 in the same district. The site change took place again in 2014, where Lot 1054 was canceled and replaced with Lot 1607. The exchange of this project site requires the Library and the Public Works Department to submit a building plan and site plan to the appropriate authority for approval. This sequence of events is a major factor that has caused delays in the implementation of the Sibu Library project.
