Introduction

Library materials need to be physically prepared and will go through processing so that they can be located, used, and returned to the library. Each item in the library must go through physical processing before items can be shelved and then circulated from the library. This include the the applicant of barcodes, seal, property stamps, laminate, security strips. Technical Services Division is handling processing of library materials received which include printed, non-printed materials and serials. Some example of those materials are as follows;

Type of collections Example
Printed Materials Monograph, Maps, Poster, Brochure, Pamphlet, Photo, Painting, Drawing
Non-Printed Materials Audio, Video, Multimedia Kit, Vinyl, CD-ROM, DVD
Serials Magazines, Newspapers, Annual Report, Journal


Two samples of processing used in this guideline are;

i. Processing of book (for printed materials)

  • Processing Library Materials Upon Received by Acquisition Unit

1. Placement of Security Strip or 3M Tattle-Tape for Books
2. Sealing of Library Logo/Property
3. Date of Acceptance Stamp
4. Generating Material Processing Form

  • Processing of Library Materials Upon Received by Cataloguing Unit

1. Placement of Security Strip or 3M Tattle-Tape for Books
2. Printing and labelling barcode based on 3M barcode template at designated areas.
3. Protecting the barcode with "Filmomatt Free" .
4. Printing and labelling call number for book spine.
5. Differentiating placement of call number for thick or small size book spine.
6. Alligning accurately the call number using angled L at the book spine.
7. Protection of with jacket using transparent plastic wrapper (Neschen AG).

ii. Processing of Compact disc (for non-printed materials)

1. Printing and labelling barcode based on 3M bar code template at designated areas.
2. Labelling call number and placement using L shape template on the CD.
