Knowledge capture is a process in knowledge management. It involves recording of explicit knowledge and transfer of tacit knowledge.

Recording of Explicit Knowledge

Explicit knowledge from its varied inaccessible primary sources such as policies, standard operating procedures, work instructions, guidelines, user manuals, project briefs, program briefs, reports and analyses is recorded in the knowledge base. Explicit knowledge or information is recorded in the forms of text, graphics, still images and videos.

The capture of explicit knowledge is done by the process owners at their own pace and time. Special sessions are also held for process owners to do build up the knowledge base together. Once published, the recorded knowledge or information is immediately accessible by those who need it in their works.

Transfer of Tacit Knowledge

Tacit knowledge or information from its primary source, i.e. the person with the expertise or competencies, to another person, the recipient, via formal or informal training and mentoring. Knowledge transferred through trainings and mentoring is only known the recipient and can only be transferred to another person via the same process.

Some forms of tacit knowledge can be coded into explicit knowledge and then recorded into the knowledge base.
