MIRI: Pustaka Miri is organising its 7th Sarawak Local Content
Competition and secondary schools in the city and its surrounding areas
are invited to send in teams.

Initiated in 2008, the competition
is to encourage students to learn the correct and proper techniques of
locating and gathering information in order to create a complete and
comprehensive project paper or report.

“The skills of planning,
collecting, recording, analysing, interpreting, synthesising,
summarising as well as presenting the information are crucial and vital
especially for students who will need to do so in higher learning or
tertiary level,” said Sofina Tan, Pustaka Miri’s public relation officer
yesterday.

Students who participate in the competition will be taught and guided by professionals who consist of lecturers and librarians.

They
will be exposed to printed and non-printed information resources which
will enable them to do research on local contents such as history,
relics, indigenous communities, cultures, socio-economics and other
topics.

This is done by participating in the Information Literacy
Skills Programme organised by Pustaka Miri in line with the competition.

A
different topic or subject is chosen every year and this year’s subject
is on ‘Local Figures of Sarawak’s Northern Region’ whereby the
participants, in groups, need to identify and choose a local figure who
has made significant contributions to the community, city or country
either socio-economically, politically or in other ways deemed
appropriate.

The best team will bring home a cash prize of RM1,000
and certificates of achievement while other teams that complete their
projects will receive RM200 cash and certificates.
