On 22
April 2014, Malaysians are encouraged to stop what they are doing and read for
ten minutes in the Lets Read Together for 10 Minutes ( Jom Baca Bersama Untuk
10 Minit ) programme together with the Council of Directors of Public Libraries
Malaysia.

According to Library
Services Head of Sector, Japri Bujang Masli, all public libraries in the state
have agreed to do this simultaneously from 10am until 10.10 am.

"This concept is based on the Earth Hour campaign which has been
successful every year and by doing this, we hope to instil an interest in
reading among the community," he said yesterday during a briefing at the
State Library here.

Wife of the Chief Minister, Puan Sri Dato Hajah Jamilah Haji Anu, Sarawak football team will be among the invited guests
for the programme which will start at 9am on 22 April.

"However, reading can be donce by anyone anywhere, be it at home or at
work. You can also do this by yourself or with a group of friends," said
Japri.

He explained that the target group would cover students from the pre-school
level until the university level, people working in the private and public
sectors, corporate bodies, non governmental organisations (NGOs), library users
and shopping centres.

"We have contacted representatives from our target group for their support
to particpate in this as we are attempting to get into The Malaysia Book of
Records with an entry of one million participants" he said.

Japri said that for each location, participants had to fill up forms as proof
of participation. Those reading on their own can download the form from the
State Library’s website, fill it and then sent it there as proof.

“For
our own records, we encourage Sarawakians to take pictures of themselves
reading on 22 April and post them on Facebook and Twitter with the hashtag ‘#lanbaca’.

“Every
Tweet and like received will be recorded as well but they will not be included
in The Malaysia Book of Records” said Japri.

He
said that participants should bring their own reading materials. They can even
read from their smart phones or tablets.

“As
long as you’re reading, it is good enough” he said.

Members
of public who are interested may contact the library at 082-442000 or visit its
