KUCHING: Be a bookworm for 10 minutes daily to see how much knowledge is gained over a period of time.
Chief
Minister’s wife Puan Sri Dato Jamilah Anu said this before launching
the statewide ‘Let’s Read Together For 10 minutes’ programme at the
State Library yesterday.
“I hope the programme will be a yearly affair to strengthen the reading culture as our way of life,” she said.
Jamilah
stressed that reading was a key to knowledge and that there was no
basic skill more important. Reading enabled a person to understand the
past and predict the future.
“Let’s practise the culture of reading so we can live a rich and meaningful life,” she urged.
Jamilah noted that the programme coincided with My Book and Copyright Day on April 23 every year.
Saying
a book is an instrument to document our knowledge of the past and will
be a heritage for future generations, Jamilah hopes to continue with the
10 minutes reading daily, frequent the library for reading materials,
and make it a family matter.
“It is with this that we translate the whole idea of reading into our vision, making a developed nation a reality,” she said.
Sarawak
State Library Management Board member Dr Abdul Rahman Deen revealed
that the state library had conducted 480 activities in 2013 and that it
was the first time the library had the same programme concurrently
nationwide yesterday.
He disclosed that in 2013 the state library
recorded 149,428 borrowing transactions from Kuching and Miri library
members. There are 102,133 registered members in the state library.
“In
this programme, we targeted one million to read for 10 minutes but this
is quantitative as the most important is we encourage and strengthen
the reading culture,” he said.
Later, guests and VIPs had a
dialogue session with local writers and poets Pharo Abdul Hakim, Maslina
Mahbu and Abang Mohammad Daud Taha about their books, work and life.
Also present was the chief executive officer of Sarawak State Library, Rashidah Bolhassan.
