This special ceremony will be attended by the Honorable Dato Sri Hajah Fatimah Abdullah, Minister of Welfare. Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development.

Reading Seeds Project is aims to introduce early literacy in the early stages of a child’s life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children who were introduced to reading early on, tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age. The Reading, rhyming, singing, and talking, beginning from birth will profoundly influence literacy and language development which are the foundations for all other learning (www.healthychildren.org).

This project is collaboration between Sarawak State Library; Ministry of Welfare, Community Welfare, Women, Family and Childhood Development Sarawak; Sarawak State Health Department and Ministry of Health Malaysia.

Under this project, babies born at government hospital and Klinik Kesihatan Kerajaan in Sarawak will receive the Reading Seed Kits content of Buku Panduan Asuhan kanak-kanak di Rumah published by Ministry of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Sarawak; 4 books (two in English and Bahasa Malaysia, one counting book and one alphabet book); Baby Developmental Milestone Guide Poster and few more.

Through Reading Seeds Project, we hope that we can promote early literacy in support of lifelong and knowledge base-society. This program will enable the parents to provide the support in the literacy development of their children so that early literacy can be done effectively.
