Reading Campaign Painting Competition
This painting competition was an initiative of Pustaka to promote reading culture in Sarawak. It was held in 2007. The idea to come up with effort was brought forward by the former State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot based on a quote “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man” by Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Bacon was writer, philosopher and royal aide.
Objectives
The objectives of the program were:
a) To increase awareness on the importance of reading among the communities
b) to utilise visual art as a tool to inculcate moral values such as reading
Scope of Painting
The painting must be based on “Reading Maketh A Full Man” concept, which was the role of reading culture in developing and nurturing the social character of a person. Participants should translate this concept into their works or they could read any book and translate their understanding or lessons learnt into their paintings.
General Terms and Conditions
a) Open to individuals domiciled in Sarawak.
b) For the Secondary School Category, the participants must be 18 years old and below on 31 May 2007.
c) For the Primary School Category, the participants must be 12 years old and below on 31 May 2007.
d) No age limit for the Open Category.
e) Submissions from schools must be verified and sent through the schools concerned.
f) The decision of the judges is final.
Terms and Conditions for Paintings
a) Painting must on painting media (paper, canvas, linen and other suitable media).
b) For Primary School and Secondary Category, the size of the painting must not be smaller an A4 paper (21cm x 29.7cm) and not bigger than an A3 paper (29.7cm x 42cm).
c) For Open Category, the size of the painting must not be smaller than an A2 paper (42cm x 59.4cm) and not bigger than an A1 paper (59.4cm x 84cm).
d) Watercolour, oil paints, oil pastels, crayons, pencils colour pencils, charcoal and other media may be used.
e) Only one submission per participant.
f) Theme of the must be stated or written in the painting.
g) Painting based on the content or understanding of a book must be accompanied by a synopsis of not less than 50 words.
h) On the right-hand corner of the back pf the painting must be stated the following information:
- Full name
- NRIC or Birth Certificate Number
- Category of participation
- Postal address
- Telephone number
- School name (for Primary School and Secondary School Category)
- School telephone number (for Primary School and Secondary School Category)
I) All submitted paintings shall be the property of the organiser and may be used by the organiser for any purposes at its own discretion.
Prizes
The prizes were in the forms of cash and certificate of participation.
Panel of Judges and Assessment Criteria

The assessment process was done in 3 stages. Firstly, 10 best paintings were evaluated and selected from the submissions. Next, the 10 paintings were then reassessed to pick the best 4. Finally, the 4 paintings were again evaluated to decide the First, Second and Third place. The Fourth place would be assigned consolation position. The judging or assessment criteria were:
1) Suitability with the objective
2) Creativity
3) Idea
4) Originality
5) Finishing
Publicity and Response
1,600 posters were sent to primary and secondary schools, institutions of higher learning, art schools and government agencies. Advertisements and announcements were also made via the conventional and electronic mass media. The program had a g good response with 422 submissions received for various categories from all over Sarawak.
Winners
