The Innovation and Sustainability (I&S) Division is one of the divisions in Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. Established in 2004, it was then called the Research and Development (R&D) Division until 2017. In 2020, its role is expanded to include knowledge management. Administratively, it is directly under the purview of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Operations). I&S Division' s core mission is to

1) undertake research and study on library, information science, records and archives management that is designed for the improvement and continuing development in the quality of library’s roles in the society and information professionals;
2) promote the practical application of relevant research findings library, information science, records and archives management;
3) promote standards, guidelines and best practices in library, information science, records and archives management;
4) provide support, inputs and advices in the establishment, expansion and improvement of library facilities through the administration of the State and Federal grants; and
5) undertake knowledge management initiatives and programmes.

Functions

Research
a) Conduct customer satisfaction surveys, market surveys and other forms of surveys.
b) Initiate, manage and administer studies or researches in library, information science, records and archives management.
c) Coordinate the initiation and implementation of improvement programmes based on recommendations from surveys and studies or researches.
d) Manage and administer studies and researches on Pustaka by external parties.
e) Manage the acquisition of data, compilation and distribution of statewide library statistics.

Development
a) Coordinate the planning of development projects under the Malaysia Plans.
b) Monitor the implementation of development projects under the Malaysia Plans.
c) Plan and implement minor development projects under operational grants.
d) Review the performance of the implemented minor development projects.
e) Coordinate the planning, implementation and review of strategic plans.
f) Monitor and coordinate the review of cross-functional continual improvement programmes.

Knowledge Management
a) Manage the identification of knowledge domains and knowledge assets.
b) Manage the capture of knowledge assets in the knowledge base.
c) Manage the timely update of the knowledge base.
d) Plan, implement and coordinate knowledge sharing sessions.
e) Plan, implement and coordinate other knowledge management initiatives.
f) Monitor the implementation of knowledge management initiatives.
g) Monitor the promotion, update and usage of the State knowledge repository.
h) Review the performance of the State knowledge repository.

Pustaka's knowledge management initiative focus on the identification, capture, organisation and sharing of explicit and tacit organisational knowledge, and awareness programs. Currently, the active programs are
