Summary
This chapter introduces and sets the stage for a discussion on women’s sports in the professional era. Beginning in the wake of the second-wave feminist movement in the 1950s in the United States, with the professionalization of golf and tennis, the push for the professionalization of other women’s sports has been slow, sporadic, and fraught with challenges. However, since the turn of the twenty-first century, there have been significant changes in the landscape of elite women’s sports. Alongside an overview of developments in elite-level women’s sports, we conceptualize the terms “professionalization,” “professional,” and “professionalism.”
