Global Food Security Governance

Summary: In 2007/2008, food prices soared, leading to a global economic crisis that left millions without enough food. In response, the 123 member countries of the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security (CFS) quickly adopted reforms to become a leading international platform for food security. A key part of this reform was including various participants, such as civil society and the private sector, in all Committee activities. This book uses data from policy documents, interviews, and observations to examine how the CFS has reorganized and functions as a model for global governance. It looks at the challenges facing global governance and explores how increased civil society engagement affects policy negotiations within the CFS, focusing on issues like investments that benefit smallholders, food price volatility, and the Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Land, Fisheries, and Forests. The author argues that civil society participants are influencing policy outcomes in the CFS. However, the analysis also shows that the CFS faces challenges from other actors trying to exert their influence on a global scale. Through this examination, the book provides valuable insights into the role of participation in global governance processes.
