MIRI: Forty nature loving students aged 4 to 12 years old here took
part in a drawing and colouring contest held in conjunction with the
“Enchanting Piasau Camp – A Nature Park in The City for Mirians”
exhibition at Boulevard Shopping Complex on Monday.
The activities
were organised jointly with the shopping complex, Pustaka Miri, Piasau
Camp Miri Nature Park Society (PCMNPS), Malaysian Nature Society (MNS),
Miri Chapter and Miri City Council, LA21.
The top three winners
respectively in Category A (4-6 years) of colouring competition were
Tiong Xin Yin, Lee Xin Rou and Vi Vilessa Puyang, Category B (7-9 years)
–Tiong Xiu Ru, Vanessa Ubong and Ivan Chiew Tong Zheng and Category C
(10-12 years) – Angie Chee Ching Hui, Michelle Ling Xin Hui and Chee
Zheh Shi.
Prizes for those top five included trophies, books,
life-long membership to Pustaka Miri and goodies. Among those
presenting the prizes was MNS Miri chapter’s chairman, Musa Musbah who
is also deputy chairman of PCMNPS.
After the competition, the
children accompanied by their parents and guardians attended a talk on
hornbills at Piasau Camp by Musa.
Among those present was the activities’ coordinator and librarian Dorothy Dela.
Meanwhile
members of the public are encouraged to view the week-long exhibition
held unitl Dec 28 at the 3rd Floor of Boulevard Shopping Complex. It is
open during the opening hours of the complex which is from 10 am to 10
pm.
Admission is free.
The exhibits included photographs and
posters on hornbills, various other birds, animals, flowers and plants
around Piasau Camp, which by now is famous as the habitat area for the
rare and protected oriental pied hornbills and also activities of LA21.
The
exhibition is part of collaborative efforts, to create greater
awareness on the importance of protecting the environment including
totally protected species like hornbills to prevent extinction.
