Community Talk: Sarawak Orchid Conservation & Sustainable Innovation Awareness Programme

MIRI – The public is invited to attend the Community Talk: Sarawak Orchid Conservation & Sustainable Innovation Awareness Programme, which will be held on 28 January 2026 (Wednesday) at the Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri, from 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM.

The programme is organised in collaboration between Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri and Sarawak Orchid Society ( SARORSO) to raise public awareness on the importance of orchid species conservation and sustainable environmental practices in Sarawak.

This state-level Orchid Species Awareness Programme aims to increase public understanding of Sarawak’s orchid biodiversity and promote responsible environmental conservation practices, aligned with Sarawak’s sustainable development aspirations and zero-carbon goals.

The main objectives of the programme are to strengthen public awareness on orchid conservation by sharing accurate scientific information about orchid species, threats to their survival, and responsible behaviour in line with Sarawak’s biodiversity priorities. The programme also aims to inspire school participation through the introduction of the JIVOM student-led micropropagation model, which has successfully transformed learning at MRSM Kuching, with the hope of expanding this initiative to schools in Miri.

This initiative directly supports Sarawak’s zero-carbon development goals and contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Innovation), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The programme will feature a panel of experienced and reputable speakers, including:

Orchid Expert and Founder of the Writhlington School Orchid Project
Topic: “From Youth to Professional: A Journey in Orchid Conservation”
