Pustaka Miri recently held the library`s first-ever `Batik
Fun Walk 2011` on 16th
July 2011. A total of twelve teams took part and the teams included
those from Government agencies, non-Governmental organisations
(NGOs), schools and even kindergartens.
The Walk was organised by Pustaka
Miri’s Sports and Recreation Club (Kelab Sukan dan Rekreasi –
KSR) with the support from Miri City Council. Its main objective was
to instill a love for the beautiful batik which is synonymous with
Malaysia and the South East Asian region as well as promoting a
healthy lifestyle by taking part in mass exercising.
The inaugural health walk took place
in Miri City Fan at 7:00am with Assistant Minister of Communications
and Sports, Datuk Lee Kim Shin gracing the event. The participants
first took part in ‘Senam Kenyalang’, a mass aerobics session
which integrates traditional dances into the exercise routines.
Batik Fun Walk was open to groups of
eight to ten persons in a team and were judged for their creativity,
sportsmanship and teamwork whilst parading in colorful attires made
from traditional batik or batik sarong.
Team
Batique Columba from SMK
St. Columba took home the first prize as well as the title of `Most
Sporting Team` whilst Team
Hospital Miri placed
second. Third place went to KEMAS
Cenderawasih from
Community Development Department (Jabatan Kemajuan Masyarakat) who
also won the title of `Most
Creative Batik Team`.
Tadika
Astana was
awarded the `Most
Participating Teams` as
they sent in four teams to join the walk.
